Short answer
Professional whitening results typically hold for months to a couple of years, depending on diet, smoking, oral hygiene and whether you top up at home. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco are the biggest causes of re-staining.

Why results fade
Whitening lifts stain from within the enamel and the layer beneath it. Nothing stops new stain from arriving afterwards. Darkly coloured drinks, tobacco, and some foods gradually build colour back up, and enamel naturally thins with age, letting the yellower layer underneath show through.
What makes the biggest difference
Rinsing with water after coffee, tea or red wine. Using a straw for iced coffee and cola. Not smoking. Brushing twice a day and cleaning between teeth. Keeping up with professional cleanings, which remove the surface staining that home brushing misses.
Occasional top-up sessions with custom trays also keep the shade steady without repeating a full course.
What whitening does not change
Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, bridges and tooth-coloured fillings do not change shade, which matters if they sit in the front of your smile — they may need replacing to match a new shade.
Grey discolouration from an old injury or certain medications responds differently to ordinary staining and should be assessed individually.
Is sensitivity normal?
Short-lived sensitivity during or just after whitening is common and usually settles within a day or two. Sensitive-teeth toothpaste in the weeks before and after helps. Persistent pain is not expected — mention it rather than pushing through.
