Patient answers

What affects the cost of a dental implant?

Short answer

Implant cost depends on how many implants are needed, whether a tooth still has to be removed, whether the bone needs grafting first, the type of final restoration (single crown, bridge or denture attachment), and the scans and planning involved. A written estimate after an examination is the only reliable figure.

An implant is a plan, not a product

People often ask for the price of an implant as though it were one item. In practice, implant treatment is a sequence: assessment and imaging, sometimes an extraction, sometimes bone grafting, the implant placement itself, a healing period, and finally the crown, bridge or denture attachment on top.

Two people can be quoted very different amounts for what sounds like the same treatment because their sequences are different.

The main factors

Number of implants. Several missing teeth in a row do not always need one implant each — a bridge can often be supported by two.

Whether a tooth needs removing first, and whether the site needs to heal before placement.

Bone volume and quality. If there is not enough bone, grafting may be needed, which adds a stage and healing time.

The final restoration. A single crown, a multi-unit bridge, and an implant-retained denture are different pieces of work.

Imaging and planning. A 3D scan is what makes accurate placement possible and is part of a careful plan.

Comparing two estimates fairly

Ask what each estimate includes: the consultation and scan, any extraction, any graft, the implant, the abutment, the final crown, and the review appointments. A lower headline figure that excludes the crown is not a lower total.

Ask about timeline too. Treatment spread over months is normal, and knowing the stages helps you plan both the visits and the payments.

What to do next

Book a consultation where the tooth or gap is examined and scanned. You should leave with a written plan that lists the stages and the cost of each, not a single number with no breakdown.

If you are weighing an implant against a bridge or a denture, ask for those alternatives to be priced as well so you are comparing real options.
