What to do while you are on your way
General first-aid guidance for common dental problems. Call the office so we know what has happened, and go to the nearest emergency room for a facial injury, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling that is closing your eye or throat.
Broken or chipped tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any pieces, and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to limit swelling.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm water and clean gently between the teeth to remove any trapped food. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue.
Swelling or an abscess
A cold compress outside the cheek can ease swelling. Swelling that spreads to the eye or neck, or comes with fever, needs urgent attention the same day.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side, and keep the area clean until it can be re-cemented or replaced.
Bleeding after an extraction
Bite firmly on clean gauze for the time you were told, keep your head raised, and avoid rinsing or spitting. Call the office if bleeding does not settle.
