Why it matters
An examination and X-ray show whether a tooth can still be restored or whether removal is the sounder choice.

Treatment benefits
We review whether a root canal, crown or other repair can keep the tooth before recommending removal.
The area is thoroughly numbed and the approach is explained step by step before we begin.
Removing a tooth that cannot be restored takes away a persistent source of infection and pain.
We discuss implant, bridge and denture options so the space is managed rather than ignored.
What to expect
We confirm the condition of the tooth, the roots and the surrounding bone.
You hear what can be saved, what cannot, and what each path involves.
The area is numbed and the tooth is removed as gently as the situation allows.
You leave with clear written guidance on protecting the socket while it heals.
At the review visit we plan how the gap will be restored if that is right for you.
Cost and planning
What an extraction involves depends on the tooth, not on a price list. These are the factors your dentist reviews at the examination.
A tooth that is fully visible is removed differently from one that is broken at the gum line or still under bone.
Front teeth have a single root; molars and wisdom teeth have several, which makes removal more involved.
An abscessed tooth may need infection managed as part of the plan.
The numbing and comfort approach is chosen with you before treatment begins.
An implant, bridge or denture afterwards is a separate stage and is planned and quoted with you.
Coverage for extractions and for replacing the tooth differs between plans.
There is no single price for this treatment. After an examination you receive a written treatment plan with the cost of each step, and our team reviews your dental benefits and payment options with you before anything begins.
Recovery and aftercare
The first day sets up the whole recovery. A blood clot has to form and stay in the socket.
Keep steady pressure for as long as you are told, and rest with your head slightly raised.
No rinsing, spitting, straws or smoking for the first 24 hours; these can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket.
Soft, lukewarm or cool foods for the first days, chewing on the other side.
From the second day, gentle warm salt-water rinses as instructed, and keep brushing your other teeth normally.
Call the office if pain worsens after day three, if bleeding does not settle, or if swelling or fever develops.
Ask at the review visit how the space will be managed, since neighboring teeth can drift over time.
Comparing your options
Removal is a last resort, not a first option. Your dentist compares both paths with you using an examination and X-ray.
